What’s the Difference Between Ball Speed and Swing Speed?

  • Swing Speed is how fast the clubhead is moving when it strikes the ball.
  • Ball Speed is how fast the golf ball leaves the clubface after impact.
  • These two are connected by your smash factor (Ball Speed ÷ Swing Speed).
Formula:
  • Ball Speed = Swing Speed × Smash Factor
  • Swing Speed = Ball Speed ÷ Smash Factor

Smash factor typically ranges:

  • Driver: 1.45 (ideal)
  • Irons: 1.30–1.38
  • Wedges: Around 1.25
